This free Word to PDF converter turns one .docx file into a static PDF in
your browser. It does not ask you to sign up before conversion. More
importantly, it shows the browser-rendered pages first, lets you choose an
exact page range and reports pagination or compatibility signals that should
be checked before the PDF is shared.
A Word document is not just a sequence of fixed pages. Word calculates line wrapping, page breaks, fields, headers, floating objects and font metrics while it lays out the document. A browser can reproduce a useful visual version, but it is not Microsoft Word's native layout engine. The practical goal on this page is therefore transparent conversion: inspect what the browser rendered, choose the pages that belong in the output and judge the generated PDF rather than assuming that a new file extension guarantees a correct document.
The current input is DOCX, the Office Open XML document format standardized in ECMA-376. The older binary .doc format is outside this tool's scope. A file that is damaged, encrypted or merely renamed to .docx may also fail because its internal package is not a readable WordprocessingML document.
How to convert Word to PDF online free
- Choose one DOCX file. The current limit is 20 MB and 60 browser-rendered pages. Use the file picker or drop the file into the upload area.
- Inspect the page thumbnails. The page displays the first six rendered pages. Check the title page, margins, paragraph wrapping, tables, images, headers and footers before choosing the output settings.
- Read any pagination warning. The tool compares the page count stored in the DOCX properties, when available, with the pages produced by the browser renderer. A mismatch does not always mean failure, but it requires visual review.
- Choose all pages or a custom range. Use a range such as
1-3, 5, 8-10when only part of the Word file belongs in the PDF. - Choose rendering detail and page encoding. High resolution with Balanced PDF is the practical starting point. Crisp text stores PNG pages and can produce a larger file.
- Set the PDF title and download filename. The title is written into PDF metadata. The filename controls the downloaded
.pdfname. - Convert and inspect the result. The result panel uses the actual PDF created in the browser. Review its pages and read the output report before downloading.
Changing the range, resolution, encoding, title or filename clears the previous result. That behavior prevents an older PDF from appearing beside controls that now describe a different output.
This is a free Word to PDF converter online because the interface runs on a web page. The current implementation reads the DOCX package, renders the pages, captures the selected pages and assembles the PDF in the browser. It does not send the document to a base97 conversion endpoint and does not require a base97 account.
Check pagination before conversion
DOCX stores content and layout instructions, but the final page boundaries can depend on the application, operating system, installed fonts and printer settings. The browser renderer used here documents an important limitation: it can split pages at manual page breaks, saved lastRenderedPageBreak elements and page-size changes, but it does not implement complete real-time pagination. See the project's DOCX rendering and page-break notes.
base97 deliberately enables saved Word page breaks. That often produces a more useful page sequence for a document that was recently saved by Word, but it does not remove the need to inspect the result.
Use the visible checks together:
- Rendered page count: the number of pages the browser can select and export.
- Word-reported page count: a stored document property that may be absent or stale.
- Reflow warning: a page became taller than its saved paper height in the browser. Text may have wrapped differently, or the document may not contain enough saved break information.
- Thumbnail preview: the most direct evidence of what will be captured.
If Word reports 12 pages while the browser renders 10, do not assume the 10-page PDF is acceptable. Compare the source document and preview. Missing fonts, automatic page breaks or unsupported floating objects may have changed the layout. Use Word's native PDF export when exact pagination is essential.
This warning system is a concrete difference from a simple upload-and-download flow. It cannot make browser pagination identical to Word, but it helps you recognize when the result needs a different conversion method.
Choose all pages or a custom range
The page selector operates on the browser-rendered page sequence. Choose All pages for the complete rendered document, or choose Custom range and enter comma-separated numbers and inclusive ranges.
1-4converts pages one through four.1, 3, 7converts three individual pages.2-6, 9, 12-14combines ranges and individual pages.
Repeated page numbers are included once, and the output follows the original rendered order. This makes the form useful when a long Word file contains appendices, internal notes or cover pages that should not be part of the shared PDF.
The range does not edit the DOCX. It does not reorder paragraphs, remove content from the source or create a new Word file. If the intended PDF needs a different document structure, edit the source in Word or another compatible editor first.
This page processes one Word file at a time. Searches for batch Word to PDF, merge Word documents into PDF or combine DOCX files describe broader workflows that are not implemented here.
Choose resolution and page encoding
Each selected page is rendered into an image before it is embedded in the PDF. The resolution control changes the image width, while the height follows the rendered page ratio.
| Setting | Rendered width | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 1200 px | Draft review, screen reading and a smaller PDF |
| High resolution | 1800 px | General sharing, tables, images and ordinary body text |
| Print detail | 2400 px | Small labels or diagrams that benefit from more pixels |
More pixels can improve the appearance of small type and thin lines, but they also increase memory use, processing time and PDF size. They cannot restore a missing font, repair an unsupported object or add detail that was not present in an embedded source image.
Balanced PDF
Balanced PDF stores each rendered page as JPEG. It is the practical default for documents containing photographs, screenshots or mixed content. JPEG compression can introduce slight artifacts around very small text or thin rules.
Crisp text
Crisp text stores each page as PNG. It avoids a new lossy JPEG step and often keeps flat-color diagrams, interface captures and type edges cleaner. It can produce a substantially larger PDF, especially when pages contain photographs or textured backgrounds.
This is where the guide connects directly to the form: start with High resolution + Balanced PDF, inspect the generated PDF at ordinary zoom, then switch to Crisp text only when visible letter edges or diagram lines justify the larger file. Use the result report's actual byte size rather than guessing from the DOCX size.
Understand the static PDF output
The generated PDF preserves the visible browser rendering of each selected page. It can include supported text styling, paragraphs, lists, tables, internal images, headers, footers, footnotes, endnotes and page geometry as they appear in that rendering.
The current output is not an editable PDF. It does not rebuild:
- Selectable or searchable text layers.
- Word paragraphs, styles, fields or content controls as PDF objects.
- Clickable Word hyperlinks as PDF link annotations.
- Comments, review balloons or a tracked-changes interface.
- Form fields, bookmarks, attachments or accessibility tags.
- Password protection, PDF/A conformance, digital signatures or OCR.
Tracked insertions are rendered using the library's non-review view while deleted runs are not shown as active review markup. Comments are counted as a review signal but are not drawn into the PDF. Fields such as a table of contents, page number or cross-reference are not recalculated by this page. A stored visible value may appear, but the converter does not update it.
The output should also not be described as a scanned PDF. It contains rasterized page images, but the tool does not imitate paper texture, scanner noise, skew or camera capture. It does not add OCR because there is no text-recognition stage.
Similarly, “Word to editable PDF” is a different requirement. A PDF may show the document correctly while still being difficult to edit. Use a PDF authoring product or Word's native export when you need selectable text, tagged structure, links or application-specific publishing controls.
Read the Word to PDF result report
The result panel reports the actual output created in the current browser.
- File size compares the generated PDF with the source DOCX. DOCX is already compressed and stores reusable resources, so a raster-page PDF can be larger than the source.
- Pages confirms the number of selected pages placed in the PDF.
- Rendered detail shows the selected pixel width and maximum page height produced during conversion.
- Document title confirms the metadata title written into the PDF.
- Source document reports the stored word count when available and the number of media files found inside the package.
- Pagination check compares stored and rendered page counts and reports selected pages that expanded beyond their saved paper height.
- Compatibility review summarizes package-level signals such as fields, tracked content, text boxes, alternate HTML content or macros.
These signals are not an automatic quality score. A document can have no flagged package features and still wrap differently because a font is unavailable. Conversely, a field marker does not prove that the visible result is wrong. Treat the report as a checklist that tells you where to look.
Review the first and last page, every page containing a table or complex image and any page near a section or orientation change. Compare page numbers, headers and total page count with the source. Then open the downloaded PDF separately before submitting it to a school, employer, client, printer or official portal.
Illustrative Word to PDF examples
Convert a report without its appendix
Assume a browser-rendered report has 18 pages and pages 16–18 are an internal appendix. Choose Custom range and enter 1-15. Select High resolution and Balanced PDF. The expected result is a 15-page PDF, and the result report should confirm that exact count.
Preserve small labels in a technical document
Assume a DOCX contains interface screenshots and diagrams with small labels. Start with High resolution and Crisp text. Compare the generated PDF with Balanced PDF at ordinary reading zoom. Keep PNG encoding only when the visible improvement matters more than the increased file size.
Respond to a pagination mismatch
Assume the DOCX properties report eight pages, but the browser renders seven and marks one page as reflowed. Do not proceed only because the thumbnails look generally familiar. Open the source in Word or LibreOffice, check fonts and page breaks, save a fresh DOCX and try again. Use native Word export if the mismatch remains.
Illustrative examples. Actual page count, file size, rendering fidelity and processing time depend on the document structure, saved break information, fonts, images and browser.
Scope, alternatives and honest limits
Several established services solve overlapping Word-to-PDF tasks:
- Adobe Acrobat Word to PDF offers a cloud conversion flow connected to Adobe's larger PDF product.
- Smallpdf Word to PDF accepts Word files in a streamlined conversion workflow and connects the result to other PDF actions.
- iLovePDF Word to PDF focuses on converting DOC and DOCX uploads to PDF within a broad PDF utility suite.
- PDF24 Word to PDF provides Word conversion alongside desktop and browser PDF utilities.
Those services may be a better fit when you need old .doc input, cloud-drive imports, larger files, batch work or server-side Office conversion. The specific base97 value is different: DOCX processing stays in the current browser workflow, the page exposes the rendered thumbnails and custom range before conversion, and the output report makes pagination and compatibility risks visible instead of presenting conversion as a black box.
Microsoft Word's own export remains the stronger option when exact Office layout is the priority. Microsoft documents its native save-or-convert workflow in Save or convert to PDF or XPS in Office Desktop apps. Native export can use Word's own pagination, fonts, field state and document model.
The current base97 limits are explicit. It accepts one .docx file, not .doc, .docm, RTF, ODT, Google Docs links or files fetched from OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive. It does not edit the Word document, combine several files, compress to an exact KB value, make a scanned-paper effect or create an editable, tagged or searchable-text PDF.
For a PowerPoint deck, use the PPT to PDF converter. For photos or scans that already exist as image files, use Image to PDF to arrange the images, choose paper and control image placement.
Troubleshoot Word to PDF problems
The file is rejected immediately
Confirm the filename ends in .docx and the file is no larger than 20 MB. An old .doc file must be opened and saved as DOCX first. Renaming .doc to .docx does not convert its internal format.
The DOCX will not open
The file may be damaged, encrypted or missing required Office Open XML parts. Open it in Word or LibreOffice and save a fresh DOCX copy. Password-protected document handling is not supported.
The page count differs from Word
Check whether the file was recently saved by Word and whether it contains reliable manual or saved page breaks. Confirm the same fonts are available. A browser renderer does not run Word's complete pagination engine, so native export is appropriate when page-perfect output is required.
Text wraps differently or a page becomes taller
A font substitution, different font metric or unsupported floating object may have changed the layout. The page marks documents that expand beyond the saved paper height. Compare those thumbnails closely and use the source application when reflow changes meaning or page references.
A table, text box or drawing is incomplete
Review package signals and page thumbnails. Complex floating text boxes, legacy drawings, SmartArt, charts, embedded Office objects and uncommon effects can render differently. Flattening a complex object to an image in the source document may help, but that changes the Word file and should be done only when acceptable.
A table of contents or page number is stale
The browser conversion does not recalculate Word fields. Update fields in Word, save the DOCX and convert the refreshed file. This page cannot guarantee that field results are current.
The PDF is too large
Choose Standard or High resolution instead of Print detail, and choose Balanced PDF instead of Crisp text. The tool does not target an exact KB or MB value and does not run a second PDF compression pass.
The PDF text is not selectable
That is expected in the current version. The selected pages are rasterized and embedded as images. Use Microsoft Word's native export or a document conversion service that explicitly preserves a text layer when selectable text is required.
Word to PDF FAQ
Is this Word to PDF converter free and available without sign-up?
Yes. The current tool does not require payment or a base97 account. It accepts one DOCX file at a time within the displayed 20 MB and 60 rendered-page limits.
Can I convert Word to PDF on a Mac or Chromebook?
Yes, when the device has a current browser with the required File, DOM, Canvas, Blob and Object URL APIs. This is a browser tool rather than a native Word to PDF converter app. Inspect the rendered pages because fonts and pagination can vary by environment.
Does the tool support Microsoft Word .doc files?
No. The current input is DOCX. Open an older DOC file in Word, LibreOffice or another compatible editor and save it as DOCX before using this page.
Can I convert selected Word pages to PDF?
Yes. Choose Custom range after the browser has rendered the DOCX, then enter numbers such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. The range refers to the page sequence displayed by this converter.
Does Word export to PDF look exactly the same here?
Not necessarily. Microsoft Word uses its own layout and pagination engine. This browser workflow is useful when its preview matches your needs, but native Word export is safer for exact fonts, fields, complex objects and fixed page references.
Research and editorial notes: Tool scope and page behavior were checked against the base97 implementation on October 2, 2026. DOCX format facts use ECMA-376. Pagination limitations use the docx-preview project's documented break behavior. Native Office export guidance uses Microsoft Support. Competitor references use official product pages to explain workflow scope, not to claim universal ranking or superiority.
